Abstract

This study was conducted to find a candidate material that has an excellent herbicidal activeity from soil actinomycetes and to analyze its herbicidal properties. The active herbicidal strain was selected through from the screening using for Digitaria sanguinalis. It was identified as Streptomyces achromogenes from based on the result of 16s rRNA analysis and named as a KR-1901 by in this paper. One of the herbicidal properties of this strain turned out to be non- selective since phytotoxicity was observed in 5 major crops including rice in the experiment. When foliar application was performed on 30 weeds including Sorghum halepense and Amaranthus retroflexus, 95-100% of herbicidal activities were observed in 26 weeds, which is considered an excellent herbicidal activity to so many different weed species. Soil treatment on 10 weeds including Panicum dichotomiflorum and Solanum nigrum resulted in stunting on all of them. There was a 90% control effect with a 1/8 dilution of the broth filtrate in the greenhouse condition on Sciyos angulatus, and the same effect was observed with a 1/2 dilution of the broth filtrate in the field condition. Compared with existing commercial herbicides, the herbicidal speed was slower than paraquat, but faster than glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium, and the herbicidal effect of the broth filtrate was the same as them after 7 days of the treatment. The herbicidal symptoms after the treatment include water soaked spots, chlorosis, leaf burn-down, and necrosis. It was concluded that the experimental results explained above demonstrates that Streptomyces achromogenes KR-1901 broth filtrate has a wide spectrum as a non-selective herbicide, and can be potentially used as an environment friendly herbicide.
