Responses of Growth and Quality of Creeping Bentgrass after Application of Liquid Fertilizer Containing Humic acid and Seaweed extract

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid fertilizer containing humic acid and seaweed extract (LHSE) on changes of turfgrass growth by investigating visual quality, chlorophyll content, dry weight of clipping, and nutrient content in leaf tissues. Treatments were designed as follows; control fertilizer (CF), HSE-1 (CF+1.0 mL m-2 LHSE), HSE-2 (CF+2.0 mL m-2 LHSE), and HSE-3 (CF+4.0 mL m-2 LHSE). After treating LHSE on creeping bentgrass, chemical properties of the treated pot soil were found to be no significant among treatments. As compared to CF, visual quality, chlorophyll content and content of N, P and K in the tissue were not significantly different in LHSE treatments. However, clipping yield and uptake of N, P and K in HSE-3 treatment were increased by 34%, 42%, 50% and 50% than those of CF, respectively. Considering the activities of antioxidant enzyme or anti-aging cytokinin of the humic acid and seaweed extract, the increased uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are significantly correlated with LHSE treatments seemed to be associated with proper root protection or maintaining of root function under higher temperature and thereby improved shoot growth of creeping bentgrass.
